Top Ten Quotes from Recent Reads

The top ten quotes from books I’ve read this year* (as hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) are in no particular order:

1. “Only the ship is made of books, its sails thousands of overlapping pages, and the sea it floats upon is dark black ink.” From The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern **.

2. “Also, I have duct tape. Ordinary duct tape, like you buy at a hardware store. Turns out even NASA can’t improve on duct tape.” From The Martian by Andy Weir **.

3. “I have been feeling very clearheaded lately and what I want to write about today is the sea. It contains so many colors. Silver at dawn, green at noon, dark blue in the evening. Sometimes it looks almost red. Or it will turn the color of old coins. Right now the shadows of clouds are dragging across it, and patches of sunlight are touching down everywhere. White strings of gulls drag over it like beads. It is my favorite thing, I think, that I have ever seen. Sometimes I catch myself staring at it and forget my duties. It seems big enough to contain everything anyone could ever feel.” From All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

4. “What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore it knows it’s not fooling a soul.” From American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

5. “I was watching a collection of vintage ’80s cereal commercials when I paused to wonder why cereal manufacturers no longer included toy prizes inside every box. It was a tragedy, in my opinion. Another sign that civilization was going straight down the tubes.” From Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

6. “What’s the point of thinking about how it’s going to end when it’s just beginning?” From Summer Sisters by Judy Blume.

7. “People who believe that they are not interesting, usually are the most interesting of all.” From One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern.

8. “You think it’s so easy to change yourself. You think it’s so easy, but it’s not. True, things don’t stay the same forever: couches are replaced, boys leave, you discover a song, your body becomes forever scarred. And with each of these moments you change and change again, your true self spinning, shifting positions– but always at last it returns to you, like a dancer on the floor. Because throughout it all, you are still, always, you: beautiful and bruised, known and unknowable. And isn’t that – just you – enough.” From This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales.

9. “You have to care about your work but not about the result. You have to care about how good you are and how good you feel, but not about how good people think you are or how good people think you look.” From Yes Please by Amy Poehler.

10. “I tried to shut out the feelings that were hurting my heart with a thousand tiny pinpricks, which was somehow worse that having it broken all at once.” From Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson.

What are your favourite quotes from books you’ve read recently?

* Not including rereads, because otherwise, all quotes would be from the Harry Potter books.
** There are so, so many great quotes from these books that is impossible to pick an actual favourite.
