6 Degrees of Separation: Wild

6 Degrees of Separation (hosted by Annabel Smith and Emma Chapman) is my favourite book meme. The goal is to construct a chain of 7 books, using any criteria you want, and see where you end up.

For this round, the starting book is Wild by Cheryl Strayed. The memoir focuses on Cheryl’s attempt to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert to Washington State while dealing with her down-spiraling personal life. I haven’t read the book yet, but I did see the movie Wild from last year with Reese Witherspoon as Cheryl, and it was probably one of her best roles.

Another of my favourite movies with Reese Witherspoon is Penelope from 2006 about a young aristocratic heiress from a cursed family. Marilyn Kaye later wrote a novelization of the movie, and it is just as good. Reese Witherspoon actually plays one of the minor characters (but she does so oh so excellently) and the main characters are portrayed by Christina Ricci and James McAvoy.

James McAvoy also starred in the 2007 movie Atonement, based on the British romance novel Atonement by Ian McEwan. Keira Knightley played the other main character, and the two are so good together.

One of my favourite Keira Knightley movies is Never Let Me Go, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s about a love triangle between the three friends Ruth, Kathy, and Tommy (played by Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, and Andrew Garfield). Izzy Meikle-Small plays the younger version of Kathy.

Izzy Meikle-Small also plays the younger version of one of the main characters (Ravena) in the 2012 movie Snow White and the Huntsman. The movie is based on the classic fairy tale of Snow White, and the version was also released as a novel the same year. In the movie, Snow White is portrayed by Kristen Stewart.

One of Kristen Stewart’s more recent roles was in Still Alice from 2014, based on the novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova about a linguistics professor who is diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. The main character, Alice, is played by the fabulous Julianne Moore.

Julianne Moore is also fabulous as Susanna in What Maise Knew from 2012 about a very dysfunctional family. The movie is very loosely based on the classic novel What Maise Knew by Henry James. The rest of the cast (Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgard, Onata Aprile, and Joanna Vanderham) is absolutely spectacular.

This time, my chain consisted of books and their movie counterparts. The chain started with a very emotionally heavy drama centered around one woman and ended with an equally emotional story about a little girl.

See Annabel’s chain here and Emma’s chain here. Or make your own. Starting with Wild, where will you end up?
