More Ideas Than Time

Project Life 2015

In theory, Project Life is one of my favourite projects. I just have a slight problem actually finishing a year (or you know, more than a month…). I first tried it in 2013 and documented 27 weeks from April to October, and then life (graduate school) got in the way and I never finished the year. I gave it a second chance in 2014 but got distracted by life (graduate school) once again.

All year long, I kept thinking that I should try and catch up, which I obviously never did. For every week that passed, it seemed like a harder task and by the summer I had stopped pretending that I would even try. Looking back at last year, I really wish I had documented it better.

So now I’m starting over again. And this time I’m gonna finish the entire year.

Third time is the charm, right?

I’ve decided to approach this project a bit differently this time (since the traditional way clearly didn’t work for me). Instead of doing weekly spreads, I’m just gonna think of it as pages. A page might be a week, or just a day. Or maybe a month. At the end of the year, I’ll have a collection of pages documenting my year. It might be 12 pages. It might be 52 pages. I can promise it will not be 365 pages.

Hopefully this way I won’t get so discouraged when I get behind (because I will get behind – my dissertation will not write itself).

Some things will stay the same. I’m sticking to the 12×12 format. There will probably be lots of photos. And lots of lists. And probably mostly black and white and neutral colours and geometric patterns. Some other things will change. There are some new things I’m thinking of trying out this year. First thing on the list: I’m abandoning the rounded corners. They have been bothering me from the start, so now I’m just gonna go with straight edges. That’s more my aesthetic.

I don’t quite know how this will go, but I guess we will find out.
