All Roads Lead Home

Today is Walpurgis Night (from the German Walpurgisnacht). In Sweden, we call it Valborg, and it’s the celebration of the arrival of spring.

It’s one of my favourite times of the year.

(But then again, are there any Swedish holidays I don’t like?)

In Sweden, Valborg is very much a public celebration. Its a day traditionally spent in the neighbourhood park, enjoying the sun and good food and drinks. The scout group I was a member of when I lived in Sweden always organizes a huge Valborg event, complete with games, cotton candy, waffles, and of course an enormous bonfire.

Seeing the pictures from this years event makes me extremely homesick.

If you understand Swedish, you should have a look at this article by Christian Geijer. It’s an overview of how it would look if Valborg had a Facebook page, complete with commentary of the evening from The Park, The Nice Weather, The Rain, The Barbeque, The Cellphones, The Fire, The Police etc. It’s great.
