Literary Junkies December 2013 Edition

Literary Junkies is an online book club that once a month meet to chat about bookish things. As usual, I’m a little late to the party. This week was kind of crazy with friend’s visiting (and their wedding!), but here is my answers to this month’s questions.

1. If you could write a book, what would it be about?
I would really like to write some kind of mystery, but I don’t think I have enough patience to actually do it. I fear that writing my PhD dissertation will be the closest I ever get to writing a book.

2. If you had to read one book or trilogy for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Can I only pick one? The Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson (but also the Harry Potter books and everything by Diana Gabaldon and John Marsden).

3. Who is your current favourite book character and why?
I just read Stealing Shadows by Kay Hooper. I found one of the minor characters, Bishop, very intriguing. I love characters that have secrets that you can’t quite figure out right away. Stealing Shadows is the first book in a long series, with Bishop being the read thread, and I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the books.

4. Is there a book you read every year during the holiday season? If so, what is it and why?
Not really. I rarely re-read books. There are so many books on my to-read-list that I never feel like I have time to revisit books.

5. Do you have any books on your Christmas list? Name a few.
I always wish for geology textbooks because they are expensive so I can’t buy all the ones I want. At the moment, I really want Modeling Volcanic Processes: The Physics and Mathematics of Volcanism.

6. What is a book you read and loved that you didn’t expect to?
Of the books I read this year, the biggest surprise was probably Rule by Jay Crownover. It was a freebie from Amazon and based on the cover, I didn’t have high expectations. There were a few spelling and grammatical errors, but the characters just grabbed you and I couldn’t put it down. I liked it so much that I immediately bought the sequel (Jet) and I’m now impatiently waiting for the next two books in the series.
