Book vs Film: The Longest Ride

March 9, 2016 | 4 comments

I’m taking a page from Kate’s book and comparing books and their film counterparts. I used to think that I’m a firm member of the book over film team but there are many examples where the film is just as good, if not better, than the book it is based on. That’s definitely the case for this one.

I read the book The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks (originally published 2012) AFTER seeing the film The Longest Ride (premiered 2015).

FILM over book, because:

1. There are major differences in plot, time line, and characters between the book and film, and I thought it all worked better in the film.

2. I was more captivated by the relationship between Luke and Sophia, and between Ira and Ruth, in the film.

3. Alan Alda and Jack Huston are great as old and young Ira in the film. (Also, Scott Eastwood.)
